Course Overview

The degree in Design, Technology and Innovation offers an opportunity for an exciting career in technology design. This new and innovative programme is the first of its kind in Ireland and offers students a truly unique learning experience. The programme has been developed by a multi-disciplinary team of Engineers, Designers, Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders. Students can tailor their own journey through this exciting new programme with three specialist stream options: Wearable Technologies, Smart Systems or Entrepreneurship. Students will also be given the opportunity to gain deep project design experience for one entire semester within either local industry or internationally through one of our international partner Institutes.

Increasingly the technology sector needs graduates who have skills that crossover several disciplines. To remain competitive organisations must always be innovative. Consequently, graduates working in the technology sector must be agile and adaptive to changing technologies and changing technology trends.

Students will gain the insight and skills to enable them to thrive and become leaders in the complex world of business and technology. Graduates will be able to determine the raw materials needed to create products, prototype designs, identify potential buyers and clients, as well as pitching for funding and even developing a marketing campaign. Graduates will instil a sustainable ethos within design teams and be able to assess the impact of technology on society and the environment.

Participants on this programme will be creative and have a strong interest in design using technology. Prior technical skills are not required, however participants should have an interest in technology and how it can be applied creatively in the design process. We look for students who have an interest in finding solutions through technical design and who have an empathy for how design solutions can impact those who use them.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate applicants will require a H5 in any two higher level subjects and a 06/H7 in four other subjects, these subjects must include Maths and English or Irish. Mature students may be admitted without meeting these formal minimum requirements.

The minimum entry requirements for QQI-FET (FETAC) graduates is any full Level 5 or Level 6 award including a distinction grade in at least 3 modules. This award must include Mathematics, Mathematics for Computing or Mathematics for Engineering. Further details are available at www.itb.ie/QQI-FET
