Minimum Entry Requirements

A National/Advanced Craft Certificate in Plumbing or Electrical. Electrical entrants or those holding Plumbing qualifications prior to 1999 will require a Gas Installer Safety (GIS) Certificate to be eligible for the Gas Installer module.

Course Overview

The programme consists of modules in Oil Installation, Gas Installation, Solar Thermal Technology and Heating Control Technology with an emphasis on the efficient control and optimisation of space heating and hot water systems. System design and integration will be considered with respect to the requirements of retrofitting of existing dwellings.

Course Aim

The programme is designed to up-skill qualified Plumbers and Electricians to operate as competent technicians capable of installing systems for space heating and domestic hot water with an emphasis on energy efficiency and compliance with regulations and codes of practice

Course Content

This programme will have a strong emphasis on practical skills and will be delivered through a combination of workshop/ labs supported by theory lectures. At ITB we have a range of modern fully equipped workshops developed specifically for the delivery of these subjects.

Semester 1 Semester 2
  • Heating Control Technology
  • Solar Thermal Technology
  • Oil Boiler Installer
  • Gas Installer Domestic

  • Gas Installer Domestic: the Craft-Person will acquire the Knowledge and Skills to enable them to install and admit Gas Safely to domestic gas installations.
  • Oil Boiler Installer: to enable them to safely install, commission and service domestic oil boilers and oil storage tanks with an emphasis on energy efficient systems and operation.
  • Solar Thermal Technology: to enable the participants design, install and commission domestic solar hot water heating systems in a safe and competent manner.
  • Heating Control Technology: to provide an extensive insight into heating control technology and maintenance, focussing on the best practice used to integrate and upgrade heating systems, reduce energy consumption and provide increased levels of comfort.

Career Prospects

Changes to the Building Regulations for Conservation of Fuel and Energy in Buildings and grant aided schemes run through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) are driving demand for competent technicians capable of installing energy efficient space and water heating systems to domestic energy retrofit projects. This momentum has been continued with the announcement of the “Better Energy” scheme in May 2011 as part of the new government Jobs Initiative. Increased regulation in this sector has also meant that technicians need to be certified and registered in order to operate and participate on grant aided schemes. There are also employment opportunities in this sector deriving from the necessity for regular servicing of gas and oil boiler installations.

What our students say...

Noel Walsh

“I’m an electrician for 15 years. I always wanted to take it one step further and go into the more engineering side of things because I’m more creative than academic. It’s tough, the syllabus is broad but if getting a degree was easy everyone would have one. The lecturers are great, very down to earth, very approachable.”
