Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold a national craft certificate in an electrical, instrumentation or mechanical trade or hold a minimum of a higher certificate in an engineering discipline. Basic computing skills will be necessary.

Course Aims

Modern process and manufacturing industries are highly automated and programmable logic controllers are widely used in the control of process parameters to ensure products of a very high quality can be produced safely and
efficiently. Technicians working in the process and manufacturing industries are
involved in the configuration, installation, programming and maintenance of
measurement and control systems. This course will provide the learners with the introductory theoretical knowledge, practical skills and competencies required to install, maintain and programme PLC-controlled equipment and automation systems.

Course Content

PLC Operation
PLC architecture. Functions of input board, output board, CPU, Power Supply.
PLC memory, programme, and PLC scan cycle. Source and sink inputs. Safety
aspects of PLC control and machine interlocks.

Field Devices
Operation and wiring of push buttons, trip rollers, reed switches, inductive sensors,
capacitive sensors, photo sensors, relays, contactors, motors. Normally open,
normally closed switches. Analogue and digital devices.

PLC Programming
Logic operations AND, OR, NOT; Truth tables and ladder diagram implementation. AND-OR blocks. Internal relays, pulse relays, latching relays. Counters and timers. PLC programming using ladder and instruction list formats. Data registers and data manipulation. Sequencing and step ladder programming.

Practical workshop
Design, programme and install circuits that include timers, counters, internal
relays and special functions. Monitor programmes to locating faults in PLC
systems.

There is a strong practical element throughout the course and students will back up their theoretical learning with practical lab work using modern state-of-the- art equipment.

Assessment

Assessment will consist of a final written exam and continuous assessment of
laboratory work throughout the course. Each component will be worth 50% of the
overall marks available.

What our students say...

Patrick McKenna

"This apprenticeship is a 10 week full time course from Monday to Friday 9 - 5. It's half theory, half practical. You have to be able to plan, draw to scale and then transfer into buildings also. You need this qualification to be able to work abroad. I like ITB, this is my second time here and I'm glad I came back. The instructors are very good here...very helpful."
